General questions about the LEUCHTIE
Yes.
If you'd like to upgrade your LEUCHTIE Plus, Premium, or Standard to the rechargeable Easy Charge version, please order the Upgrade Easy Charge in our online shop and send us your LEUCHTIE for conversion.
You'll find more details on the procedure in the product description in the online shop.
After the conversion, your LEUCHTIE will be charged inductively using a USB charger we developed ourselves. This means there is no USB port on the LEUCHTIE through which dirt or moisture can enter. Your rechargeable LEUCHTIE therefore remains just as 100% waterproof as the battery-powered versions.
No.
LEUCHTIEs do not bother dogs because they emit only a bright, steady light. We deliberately avoid fast-flashing lights or other modes that might unsettle dogs. On the contrary, the bright, steady light from LEUCHTIEs actually gives many dogs a sense of security in the dark. This effect may be even more pronounced with the senior edition.
In this way, we reliably guarantee the safety of your dog and also that of our fellow human beings when going for a walk and in traffic.
If your dog has trouble putting on collars or harnesses, we recommend making sure that the LEUCHTIE doesn’t start glowing until the dog is wearing it, and not already when you put it on.
Yes.
Thanks to very bright LEDs, all LEUCHTIEs offer great brightness and safety for your dog.
The brightness depends on two factors:
1. Color
The longer, thicker, and darker your dog’s coat is, the brighter the LEDs should be. You can find out which LEUCHTIE colors are particularly recommended for your long-haired dog, listed in order from the brightest to the dimmest.
2. Model
In addition to color, long-haired dogs with a dense coat on the neck benefit from constant brightness without dimming, as offered by the LEUCHTIE Easy Charge model (USB-rechargeable). This model is specifically designed for very long-haired dogs - such as Australian Shepherds, Newfoundlands, etc. - and for long distances.
Additionally, you can attach cones to your LEUCHTIE to direct the light through the fur.
No
Your dog - and we humans, too - very rarely find the LEUCHTIE’s bright light bothersome. But the subjective perception of brightness varies from person to person. If your eyes are very sensitive, we recommend choosing a LEUCHTIE that suits your needs:
- Choose a model that doesn’t have a constant brightness: LEUCHTIE Plus or LEUCHTIE Mini.
- Order a color with slightly lower brightness, such as Sunset Orange, Hot Pink or Red.
- Opt for a LEUCHTIE with a colored tube rather than a clear, transparent one. This is especially recommended if your dog stays close to you and has short fur around its neck. In the transparent tube, we offer: bicolored versions, LEUCHTIEs customized in the configurator, the Senior Edition, and the colors Blush, Green, Lavender, Lime, and White.
No
We deliberately do without different light settings, such as hectic flashing or the like. In our experience, many dogs are unsettled by blinking, especially when it is fast or arrhythmic. Also oncoming dogs often react irritated - tense encounters and conflicts can be the result. In addition, also for many dog owners a flashing light collar is very disturbing.
Therefore we have designed the LEUCHTIEs out of conviction - based on our many years of experience as dog owners - in such a way that they shine exclusively as very bright permanent light. This helps making dogs feel much more secure and comfortable in the dark (especially the senior edition).
In addition, the LEUCHTIEs are so bright that they make dogs clearly visible from all sides, even over long distances - so there’s absolutely no need to use different flashing settings to attract additional attention.
The glow-in-the-dark battery compartments are phosphorescent, meaning they continue to glow in the dark after being exposed to light. In other words, they slowly release the ambient light they previously absorbed while in the dark. How brightly they glow depends on the amount of light they previously absorbed.
A phosphorescent battery compartment makes it easier to locate the LEUCHTIE when it is turned off or has opened, in the unfortunate event the dog should lose it.
No
LEUCHTIEs are generally very lightweight and comfortable for dogs to wear.
Thanks to the use of delicate components - often custom-made in collaboration with our suppliers - they meet the specific needs of even small and lightweight dogs.
The weight of a LEUCHTIE depends on its size:
Mini LEUCHTIEs weigh about 55 g, while the larger models (Plus and Easy Charge), starting at size 35, weigh about 110 g.
Please note: The sturdy-looking battery compartment is not solid; it consists of a tubular battery compartment and covers on both the top and bottom. As a result, it is also very lightweight and does not hinder the dog.
Yes
All LEUCHTIE models are 100% waterproof. You can even swim and dive with it without any problems.
The electronics of the LEUCHTIE are in the light tube.
In the battery compartment are only either 2 standard batteries or 2 rechargeable batteries inserted, depending on the model.
The brightness of the colors varies and depends on the model and the LED color.
Which color suits you best depends on your specific needs - for example, how long and dark your dog’s fur is around the neck, or how far away your dog is.
Of course, your personal perception of brightness and color, as well as your personal taste, also play a role.
[nbsp]
The brightness of the colors is generally perceived in the following order:
- Green* / Neon Green
- Turquoise
- Lime*
- Ice Blue
- White*
- Sunny Yellow
- Blush*
- Blue
- Lavender*
- Sunset Orange
- Hotpink
- Red
* These colors have a colorless, transparent tube.
If you have light-sensitive eyes or if your dog has short hair and is close to you, colors with slightly lower brightness may be more comfortable.
We strive to ensure that the colors in all photos and illustrations are as true to life as possible. But please note that colors may vary depending on your screen and settings and may differ from the original.
How to determine the right size for your dog:
LEUCHTIE is slipped over the head as a closed ring. Therefore, it’s the head circumference - not the neck circumference - that matters (see point 3 for an exception).
- Please measure your dog’s head circumference at the thickest point - right in front of the ears - tightly with a tape measure.
- Select the closest size. If the measurement falls between two sizes, choose the smaller size preferably.
- Is your dog's neck circumference larger than the head circumference?
Measure the neck circumference at the point where you want the LEUCHTIE to fit.
Base your choice of size on this measurement.
LEUCHTIE Plus and Easy Charge are available in the following sizes (in cm [inch]):
35 [14] / 37,5 [15] / 40 [16] / 42,5 [17] / 45 [18] / 47,5 [19] / 50 [20] / 52,5 [21] / 55 [22] / 57,5 [23] / 60 [24] / 62,5 [25] / 65 [26] / 67,5 [27] / 70 [28].

Since 2003, our LEUCHTIEs have operated according to the principle: “What isn't there can't break.”
Our goal back then was to combine the simplest possible operation with maximum functionality. That’s why LEUCHTIEs use a sensor - we deliberately avoid using a switch or push button that’s prone to malfunction, because such components wouldn’t meet our standards for quality and durability. Since the light is turned on and off via a sensor, nothing can wear out, and water or dirt can’t get inside in the first place. The result: The LEUCHTIE has no switch, is completely waterproof, very robust, and extremely durable.
We offer 3 different sensor variants to choose from:
1) Motion sensor
Switching on and off: automatically by motion sensor

Extremely easy to use: The LEUCHTIE turns on automatically when the battery compartment is facing down. If the battery compartment is facing up, it slowly turns off automatically after about 1 minute.
2) Magnetic sensor
Switching on and off: manually by magnetic sensor

The LEUCHTIE is switched on and off only by passing the supplied magnet over the sensor in the light tube. This allows you to turn it on and off as needed - for example, to make it easier to transport or to save energy.
3) Motion and magnetic sensor
Switching on and off: automatically by motion sensor and manually by magnetic sensor.

Combination of both kinds of on and off functions.
To identify which LEUCHTIE model you have, please look at the size sticker on your LEUCHTIE. Currently sold LEUCHTIEs have the model name on the size sticker.

For older LEUCHTIEs, you can tell the model by the colour of the sticker:
silver sticker: LEUCHTIE Standard or Plus
black sticker: LEUCHTIE Premium or Premium Easy Charge
white sticker: LEUCHTIE Plus, Plus Easy Charge or Pro Easy Charge
Activation and commissioning

To prevent your LEUCHTIE Mini from switching on during shipping, one of the batteries has been inserted upside down as a transport lock. For the first activation this battery must be turned around:
- To open the LEUCHTIE, separate the tube at the side of the size sticker from the battery pack with a slight twisting movement, taking care not to use excessive force.
- Remove the battery from the end of the tube and turn it around.
- Place the battery into the light tube with the negative pole ahead.
- Push the battery pack back into the end of the tube. Take care that the spring is centred in the battery pack.
- Press tube and battery pack firmly together as far as it can go. There must be no gap between the battery pack and the tube.
Remove the transport protection (insulation cap):
Open the LEUCHTIE on the side of the tube without the size sticker.
- Remove the red insulation cap from the spring:
- Hold the silicone sleeve on the battery compartment and pull the light tube off the battery compartment with gentle twisting motions (1). The silicone sleeve remains on the battery compartment.
- Remove the red insulation cap (2) from the tip of the spring.

- To close it, insert the light tube straight into the battery compartment, taking care not to bend the contact spring.

- Press battery compartment and light tube firmly together as far as it can go - there should be no gap between the battery compartment and light tube.

Each LEUCHTIE comes with a connecting loop that serves as a loss prevention device.
To secure the LEUCHTIE to a collar or harness using the connecting loop, pull the open end of the light tube through the two transparent rubber rings on the loop. Make sure the attachment loop is positioned at the top center of the LEUCHTIE.

Handling and malfunction
Before your LEUCHTIE goes on summer break, please charge it fully until both the green and red LEDs on the charging station are lit - with the green LED as bright as possible.
You're also welcome to recharge it again from time to time during the summer.
Store it in such a way that it doesn’t turn on accidentally and drain the battery.
If you can't ensure this, simply remove the battery compartment.

Make sure your LEUCHTIE is switched on via the magnetic sensor:
The magnetic sensor is located inside the light tube (opposite the tip of the battery compartment). To switch it on and off, move the supplied magnet close to this point.
Please note:
If you are using your LEUCHTIE in combination with another magnet, please ensure there is a sufficient distance (approx. 10 cm) between them. Otherwise, there is a risk that the magnetic sensor in the LEUCHTIE could be switched off.
The magnet in question could, for example, be a GPS tracker, a collar with a magnetic fastening or, in some cases, the magnetic charging contacts of a second LEUCHTIE (for instance, during rough play).
[nbsp]
If you have a LEUCHTIE with a combined motion and magnetic sensor, please note the following:
The motion sensor only works if you have switched on your LEUCHTIE via the magnetic sensor.
- If the LEUCHTIE is switched off via the magnetic sensor, the motion sensor is deactivated and the LEUCHTIE will not light up in any position.
- If the LEUCHTIE is switched on via the magnetic sensor, the motion sensor works as normal.
If, contrary to expectations, your LEUCHTIE still does not light up, you can find further tips on possible causes of faults with the LEUCHTIE here.
Possible causes of faults with the LEUCHTIE Mini:
- The LEUCHTIE Mini was not activated when first put into use.
- The batteries are flat:
Replace the batteries and insert two new ones. - The batteries were inserted the wrong way round when they were replaced.
- The LEUCHTIE Mini is not closed properly.
- The batteries have leaked:
If you notice battery acid in the battery compartment or discoloration on the plastic sockets at the ends of the tube, on the wires or on the cable inside the light tube, please send us your LEUCHTIE along with a completed service form. - Cause of fault: magnetic sensor
If you have a LEUCHTIE that
a) has a magnetic sensor (instead of a motion sensor)
b) has a combined motion and magnetic sensor
please make sure the magnetic sensor is switched on.
Possible causes of faults with the LEUCHTIE Plus:
- The LEUCHTIE Plus was not activated when first put into use.
- The batteries are flat:
Replace the batteries and insert two new AAA alkaline batteries. Please do not use rechargeable batteries. - The batteries were inserted the wrong way round when replacing them.
- The battery compartment was fitted onto the light tube the wrong way round:
Please check this using the information on changing the batteries. - The LEUCHTIE is not closed correctly:
Press the battery compartment and tube firmly together on both sides as far as it will go – there must be no gap visible between the battery compartment and the light tube. - The contact springs are faulty:
One spring protrudes from each end of the light tube. Neither spring must be jammed or bent. They must be straight and screwed firmly into the nut. - The batteries have leaked:

Please check that:
- the LEUCHTIE is firmly connected on both sides, all the way to the stop. There must be no gap between the light tube and the battery compartment.
- the springs protruding from the light tube are straight, firmly screwed into the nut and show no signs of discoloration.
- the edges of the battery compartment are bent, preventing the tube from being pushed on as far as it will go.
- the silicone sleeves are centered over the junction between the light tube and the battery compartment (the end of the sleeve with the ringed ridge is on the battery compartment).
- the silicone sleeves fit snugly and show no signs of damage.
- the inside of the silicone sleeves and the ends of the tube over which the sleeves sit are clean, dry and free from grease. Due to sebum deposits from the dog’s coat, we recommend cleaning the sleeves with warm water and washing-up liquid if necessary (rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely). Please do not use aggressive or solvent-based cleaning agents.
- The LEUCHTIE is attached to the collar or harness and there is tension on the loop, particularly when the dog lowers its head.
- You notice signs of leaking batteries or rechargeable cells.
If there is a slight loose connection, a little contact spray on the springs or battery terminals often helps.
If you are unable to resolve the fault, please feel free to send your LEUCHTIE (including the charging station, if applicable) to us for inspection or repair, along with a completed service form.
Correct connection of battery compartment and light tube
Please always ensure a correct connection between battery compartment and light tube. Otherwise the connection may open too easily or loose contacts may occur.
Assemble the LEUCHTIE correctly:

The silicone sleeves are located on both sides centrally on the transition from battery compartment to light tube and do not show any defects.
- The LEUCHTIE is completely closed up to the stop: there is no gap between the light tube and the battery compartment.
- The sleeve end with the annular bead is located on the battery compartment on both sides.
Possible sources of error
LEUCHTIE is not completely closed:

The light tube is not completely inserted into the battery compartment. A gap can be seen between the light tube and the battery compartment.
Incorrectly attached silicone sleeves:

The sleeve is not pulled all the way to the stop on the battery compartment - it is located too far on the light tube.

The sleeve is pulled beyond the stop of the battery compartment - it is too far on the battery compartment.

The sleeve is attached the wrong way round. The sleeve end with the ring bead must be on the battery compartment.
Kinked battery compartment:

The edge of the battery compartment has been accidentally kinked when the light tube was inserted into the battery compartment.

As a result, the light tube cannot be inserted completely into the battery compartment up to the stop.

By comparison, here is a correctly fitted battery compartment with the sleeve attached.
The contact springs are screwed into a nut like a screw, which is located in the connecting socket.

You can buy replacement contact springs as spare parts.
Instructions for replacing or fitting the spring
1) To replace a bent spring, turn it counterclockwise out of the socket with your thumb and index finger.
2) Remove the colored spring retainer with a pointed object (screwdriver, flat-nose pliers, etc.).

3) Screw the new contact spring with the tightly fitting coils first 4-5 turns clockwise into the connecting socket.
4) Check that the spring is firmly seated in the thread by pulling gently on it. Be careful not to overstretch the spring.

5) Insert the spring retainer over the contact spring into the socket. Note the two colors of the spring retainers: the blue one goes in the tube side with the size label, and the red one in the other side.

Now press the socket gently against a flat surface to push the spring retainer fully into the socket. Take care not to kink or bend the contact spring in the process.

6) Repeat the insertion of the spring on the other side of the tube.
7) Insert the two ends of the light tube one after the other straight into the battery compartment. Be careful not to bend the contact springs.

8) Press the battery compartment and the tube firmly together on both sides as far as they will go. IMPORTANT: There must be no gap between the battery compartment and the tube:

Notice:
The spring retainers have two functions: firstly, they ensure that the spring is aligned with the center of the battery terminal; and secondly, their color indicates which way round the light tube and battery compartment should be connected.
A rhythmic flashing on the Premium and Premium Easy Charge models (version up to 2020) indicates that the energy is used up. Please change the batteries of your LEUCHTIE Premium or recharge your Premium Easy Charge immediately.
If your LEUCHTIE flashes arrhythmically, there is probably a loose contact.
battery powered models

- The battery life is approximately 50 hours.
- Use branded AAAA / LR 61 alkaline batteries (not rechargeable batteries) and remove dead batteries immediately to prevent damage from leaking batteries.
- If the LEUCHTIE will not be used for an extended period, e.g., during the summer, remove both batteries.

- Detach the light tube from the battery compartment one side at a time. While doing so, hold the silicone sleeves on the battery compartment firmly.

- Remove the two used batteries.
- Insert 2 new batteries (alkaline AAA/Micro, not rechargeable) into the battery compartment so that
the positive terminal is visible on one side
and the negative terminal is visible on the other side.
The sockets at the end of the light tube each contain a contact spring on both sides, as well as a red and a blue mark. Connect the light tube and the battery compartment as follows:
- the end of the tube marked red to the positive terminal
- the end of the tube marked blue to the negative terminal

Test that it works. If the LEUCHTIE isn't working, check the following:
- Are both batteries inserted correctly?
- Is the light tube attached to the battery compartment the right way around?
- Is there a contact spring protruding from each end of the tube?
The springs must not be kinked or bent. They must both be straight and screwed firmly into the nut.
rechargeable Easy Charge models
Before using your LEUCHTIE for the first time, charge it until both the red and green LEDs on the charging station light up.
Charging the batteries:
Use only the original LEUCHTIE charging station.
- Place the charging station flat on a level surface with the charging contacts facing up. Connect the charging station to a single outlet using a USB adapter.
The green LED is lit:
The charging station is ready for use. - Place the LEUCHTIE on the charging station so that the magnetic charging contacts are in contact with it.
The red LED lights up:
The batteries are charging. - The green and redLEDs light up:
The batteries are fully charged. The brighter the green LED shines, the fuller the batteries are.
There is no risk of overcharging, even during extended charging times.
Charge your LEUCHTIE at least once a week until both LEDs light up, with the green one as bright as possible.
The durable NiMH rechargeable batteries do not have a memory effect.
Charging early has the following advantages:
- Optimal battery preservation (more charge cycles)
- Maximum runtime and brightness
- Shorter charging times
Tips:
- Charge at room temperature.
- The charging process can be interrupted without any problems, e.g., to go for a walk.
- The charging contacts on the battery compartment only conduct electricity during the charging process. There is no danger whatsoever if they are short-circuited or come into contact with water.
- Make sure the battery compartment is clean and dry before placing it on the charging station.
- Before prolonged periods of non-use (e.g., during the summer), fully charge your LEUCHTIE. Store it in such a way that it does not turn on.
- If charging problems occur, check and clean the magnetic contacts with tape.
- The rechargeable batteries are replaceable.
Please use the correct batteries for your LEUCHTIE (Which model do I have?).
LEUCHTIE Easy Charge (formerly Pro and Premium):
Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, 1.2 V, with low self-discharge (LSD) (Order batteries)
LEUCHTIE Plus Easy Charge (no longer available since 2019):
Nickel-zinc (NiZN) batteries, 1.6 V
Using the wrong batteries can cause malfunctions and significantly shorten the batteries lifespan.
Tip: Please use batteries with low self-discharge (LSD).
Removing the rechargeable batteries
